Nowadays, wedding fads come and go. But there’s one trend that seems to have outlived the nitrogen ice-cream bar and obligatory photo booths of yesteryear. In recent years, more and more canines have filled the roles of ring bearers and even maids of honor, proving they can be way more than just man’s best friend. We caught up with some Lowcountry locals who had their favorite four-leggers front and center on that day of vow and ring exchange to find out why they wouldn’t have had it any other way. When Deidre Kennedy, owner of Leaf Interior Design, got her cocker spaniel, Sullivan, 11 years ago, she imme- diately knew he would have a lasting impact on her life, though she may not have known at that moment he would sit beside her on her wedding day, decked out in a golden bow tie. “Thomas and I decided that we were going to ‘elope’ locally and have a private ceremony with just a few people – Thomas’ children, my best friend and our officiant,” said Kennedy. “There was no doubt in my mind that my fur child would be there, too.” So, on a clear day in March of last year, Kennedy, her groom and a few special individuals came together for a memorable event. As promises of cherishing in sickness and in health were made, Sullivan looked on approvingly, as if to give his blessing. “Being able to have Sullivan with us was wonderful,” said Kennedy. “We did our homework by making sure the location was dog-friendly, and we let the staff know ahead of time that he would be joining us. If you’re considering having your dog be a part of your special day, I’d just make sure your expectations of the dog are realistic and that he’s trained and prepared for the crowd.” “I DO!” ...
