We didn’t want him to end up with a close friend or family member that he wouldn’t know or who wasn’t prepared to take him in,” he said. While a will determines where your property goes after you die—such as leaving your pet and $10,000 for gener- al care to a named friend—Willey explained that “a trust provides a little more control because you can specifically say what the rules are for the care of your pet and how you want the money in the trust to be spent.” In other words, a trust dictates how that $10,000 is allocated — where your pet is groomed and how often; what pet daycare it attends; dietary instructions; preferred veterinarians; and more. Of course, a trust also comes with the added fee of paying a trustee to enforce your wishes. “We went through estate planning several years ago with our attorney and discussed the things we’re concerned with or worried about,” said Tyler. “With us not having chil- dren, the big thing was our goldendoodle, and I wanted to make sure there was a plan of care for him — that whoever we sent him to wasn’t unnecessarily burdened with undue cost.” Such planning offers Tyler a sense of relief, but Raymond noted that it’s also a relief for your loved ones. “The main reason to prepare a last will and testament is that it will ease the practical burdens on your family and loved ones during an emotionally difficult time. Whenever any person passes away, he or she inevitably will leave some worldly affairs unsettled,” he said. “Caring for pets requires different skills than organizing and distributing tea sets or lawn mowers,” Raymond con- tinued. “Pets who lose an owner need their basic needs met, like food and water, but, more than that, they can suffer emotionally and need the right person to give them atten- tion and love.” Whomever you delegate, make sure you have a conversa- tion with them and give them time to truly commit. Then prepare your estate with an attorney, rather than an online program like LegalZoom. Willey noted that nearly 50% of the wills created on LegalZoom are not legally enforceable, as such sensitive documents need to be witnessed and nota- rized. On average, the process costs around $1,000, but it’s a small price to pay for your pet’s forever care. U 423 W Coleman Blvd A, Mt.
