If your dog has noise phobia, there’s an 80% chance they’ll have separation anxiety. Yet no other behavior impacts the household like sepa- ration anxiety. Owners may feel like prisoners trapped at home or guilty knowing their dog is suffering when they venture out. Unfortunately, dogs do not “get over” separa- tion anxiety without specialized help. With treatment, you can regain freedom, peace of mind and the relationship with your dog you once had. Close to 75% of dogs treated for their phobia will see significant improvement or full resolution. Those are excellent odds for you and your pet. HOW TREATMENT WORKS Effective treatment is fairly straightforward, but it takes commitment. It can be challenging for an owner to address on his or her own. Proper treatment involves gradually desensitizing a dog to being alone. Start off with a period of time that is not stress- ful for your dog, and slowly increase it. Over time, your pet will tolerate longer stretches of being alone and eventually be able to face it without distress. With technology on our side, we can watch your dog handle absence in real time, gauge your pet’s tolerance and modify the program accord- ingly. Separation anxiety is not one-size-fits-all, and the treat- ment can’t be, either. Each dog is different. Your trainer should be supporting you throughout your progress, adjust- ing exercises based on feedback. There is nothing more gratifying than seeing a dog once paralyzed by fear react comfortably to being alone. When that day comes, it’s cause for an owner celebrating, having dinner out and leaving the pooch at home in peace. U KEEPING OUR FOUR-LEGGED FAMILY MEMBERS HEALTHY!
