Find a mountain lodge with hiking trails and wildlife nearby; a beachfront home with its own pool oasis; or a cute cottage in a historic neighborhood with plenty of walkability. Pet-friendly rental properties are a great way to enjoy a change of scenery while laying low. With a little imagination, forethought, and planning, a pet-friendly trip can be fun for the whole family. When packing, dogs don’t need much more than their bowls, food, water, a properly fitting harness and ID tags. Make sure your dog is on a flea and tick control treatment and heartworm preventative before you leave. And bring along extra jugs of water and towels in case of car trouble. Wet- ting a towel and draping it over your pup will keep things cool until help arrives. Always keep an eye out for extreme temperatures, and keep your pet in the shade to protect paw pads from hot surfaces and sidewalks. The sight of humans packing up a suitcase can send chills down our beloved pets’ spines, but knowing that they are tagging along for the ride can put pep in the step of home- body hounds and destination-loving dogs alike. Even cats can be excellent travel buddies, but let’s be honest — most cats are happy to see you go, planning the many ways they’ll make you feel guilty when you return.
