Evenings would be just as great: We’d have dinner, I’d get belly rubs and a few treats and the evening would wane as Mom read a book and I would snuggle in with my giant lamby at her feet. I tell you, I had a dog’s best life. But something changed as winter rolled around. There were boxes everywhere. My toys were disappearing, and strange men were taking everything away. I settled in my crate as my life was uprooted. And before I knew it, I was on the longest ride ever – and I hate car rides. It was light, it was dark, it was light … and then we arrived. There was cold, icy stuff on the ground, and more in the sky. Once in the door of the tall building, I carefully made my way down some steps into a dark cave. “We’re home, Bee,” Mom said uneasily. What? No, not here. This can’t possibly be right , I thought with panic. The cold air seeped into my thick coat, and I curled up safely in the back room, as familiar-smelling boxes filled the cave. Every day was night. Dark, gray, dark, gray. And mom would put weird socks on my feet before we went outside. But that powdery, cold stuff sure was fun! I’d roll and lick and dig until my nose was numb. We’d mostly stay inside though. By the fire. Mom would chatter excitedly on the phone sometimes, but mostly it was a low-key life. Life was different, Mom was different, and sometimes, I tried to remember that last place I was at … and I think she was trying, too. One day, spring decided to come – and with it, hope for more walks. But no, here we go again, the boxes! My dis- may must have shown, as Mom stroked my head and told me it would all be great again soon. Another car ride. Where to now? We only just got here. ... Night, day, night. We arrived as the sun was rising. I smelled a smoky, meaty smell. I saw a stray cat. Mom opened the trunk, and, as soon as my paws hit the ground, I danced with happiness. We were back. I ran through the grassy jungle yard. I even refused to come inside, fearing I’d have to leave again. But then I knew – mom was at ease more than ever be- fore – this was where we would stay forever. So, without hesitation, I stepped inside boldly, howling “I’m home!” U Life is good.
